About The Family Centre

We bring together families living with deafness through organised children's activities, a youth club and family sessions.

We encourage all the family to get involved in our activities and we welcome deaf parents and their children, hearing parents, their deaf child and hearing siblings, grandparents, relatives, carers, children's and family friends.

We provide a range of fun activities and learning opportunities for the children.  Our sessions are designed to include and engage all the children attending whatever their level of hearing and whether they use hearing aids, have cochlear implants or sign.  British Sign Language (BSL) communication is always available from staff, volunteers and/or interpreters.

At every family activity there is an opportunity for parents and carers to come together with other families so they can meet those in a similar situation and benefit from their knowledge, experience and support. This will allow them to get a fuller picture of the choices available to them and their children, and understand the practicalities of these options.

We run a Deaf Youth Club for children/young people aged 11-19, with regular sessions open to 8-10 year olds.  During term time the youth club sessions are run on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. We also have a programme of activities during the school holidays.

In 2015 we started a Kids Club for deaf children aged 6-10.  These sessions happen once a month on Saturday afternoons, during term time.

We have families registered with us from the old Avon area and from much further afield.  If you live in our area, or have a connection to the area, we'd love you to get involved.

Most of our trustees are living with deafness, making us a user-led organisation and enabling us to be in touch with the needs of our family members.
